On Stewardship and the Orthodox Life - Part 115: Where Is Your Heart? (10/09/16)

“For where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.”  (Matthew 6: 21 RSV)

Where is your heart? Is it all wrapped up in the secular world looking for fame, glory, riches, and a life of luxury? Do you attend Liturgy on Sunday and by Monday morning go back into the world practicing secular beliefs? Do we pray to God on Sunday only to prey on man on Monday?

Abbott Tryphon stated it most succinctly, “There is no benefit whatsoever if we reach the highest perfection and precision in living by all the ascetic and spiritual rules if we only have love for ourselves and pride in our accomplishments.”

One must decide where their heart is, the world or Christ; you can’t have it both ways.  “You cannot serve both God and mammon" (Matthew 6: 24 RSV). So why do you worry and fret over tomorrow and spend your time in frivolous pursuits that are fleeting?

Serve God, give that precious commodity, time, to the service of God and your neighbors. Be a good steward of your time and use your talents in reaching out to others, helping others, supporting church activities and living a Christian life.

Our earthly life is short, it passes in a blink of the eye. But our life in God’s future kingdom is eternal. Use the time and talents that God has given you in this life to lay up riches in heaven.
