Prayer Before Reading Holy Scripture

O Master Who loves mankind, illuminate our hearts with the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our mind to understand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, that we may overcome all carnal desires, entering upon a spiritual life and understanding and acting in all things according to Your holy will. For You are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies, O Christ God, and to You we give glory together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, gracious and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

Epistle Reading: Hebrews 7:18-25

For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness,

for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath

(for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him: "The LORD has sworn and will not relent, ' You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek' "),

by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.

And there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing.

But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood.

Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He ever lives to make intercession for them.

Gospel Reading: Mark 12:1-12

Then He began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a place for the wine vat and built a tower. And he leased it to vinedressers and went into a far country.

"Now at vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that he might receive some of the fruit of the vineyard from the vinedressers.

"And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

"Again he sent them another servant, and at him they threw stones, wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully treated.

"And again he sent another, and him they killed; and many others, beating some and killing some.

"Therefore still having one son, his beloved, he also sent him to them last, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

"But those vinedressers said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'

"And they took him and killed him and cast him out of the vineyard.

"Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the vinedressers, and give the vineyard to others.

"Have you not read this Scripture: 'The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"

And they sought to lay hold of Him, but feared the multitude, for they knew He had spoken the parable against them. So they left Him and went away.
