Orthodox Youth & Young Adult Sunday

Dear Beloved in Christ,

God bless you always!

This year the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America has designated September 22nd as Orthodox Youth & Young Adult Sunday. The work of supporting our young people to remain and grow in the Orthodox Christian faith is an integral part of the work of the Assembly, each jurisdiction, parish, and family. Our youth workers dedicate themselves tirelessly to sharing their faith with the next generation of Orthodox clergy and faithful and instill in each of them a love for Christ and his Church.

Throughout the history of God’s people, each generation has been called to tell of the works of the Lord to the next generation. “So these words I command you today shall be in your heart and in your soul. You shall teach them to your sons, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). In both word and deed, our lives are to be the witness to our children and grandchildren that enlivens and inspires their faith through the grace of the Holy Spirit. If we do not share this precious Orthodox Christian faith with them, who will?

The results of our labors and their growing faith will be self-evident as our youth in turn proclaim the salvation of the Lord throughout their life, and in due time, to the generation that comes after them. The psalmist writes, “my mouth shall proclaim Your righteousness, Your salvation all the day… You taught me, O God, from my youth, and from then until now I will proclaim Your wonders. And even to old age and to my last breath, O God, do not abandon me, Until I proclaim Your arm to every coming generation, yes, Your mighty deeds and Your righteousness” (Psalm 70:15-18).

As the Episcopal Liaison of the Orthodox Youth & Young Adult Ministries (www.theOYM.org), I encourage everyone to observe this day and consider the integral part that you play in the growing faith of our young people play and how each one plays a part in the life of the Church.  Then, take a measurable step to inspire, support, and guide our young people in the faith.  Each one of us is needed in this important effort.  I encourage everyone to be personally involved as well to support the youth workers in your parish with the necessary funds, volunteers, and resources.  May God bless all our young people in this coming year, and from generation to generation!

Yours in Christ,

† Bishop Thomas
