Eternal Memory: Protopresbyter Elias Kozar

JOHNSTOWN, PA - With great sorrow, the Diocesan Chancery announces the falling asleep in the Lord of Pani Anna Kozar, the wife of the late, Very Rev. Protopresbyter Elias Kozar, Pastor Emeritus of St. Mary's Orthodox Church of Yonkers, NY. on Friday, October 27th.

Pani Anna was born in New York City, on December 8, 1925, to the late Konstantine and Anna (Herko) Yanoscik and was educated in New York City schools. After graduation, she worked for the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company in Manhattan. During the 1980's she worked for Martinelli Publications in Yonkers.

On January 25, 1948, she married Fr. Elias Kozar at St. Nicholas Church in New York City.  Fr. Elias was ordained to the holy priesthood on February 1, 1948, and was assigned to St. Mary's Church in Buffallo NY, where the couple lived for three years. In 1951, Father Kozar assumed pastorate at St. Mary's Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church in Yonkers, where he and Pani Anna resided until Father Kozar's retirement in 1996. They subsequently moved to Newburgh NY.

Pani Anna, was a loving and caring wife and mother. She played an important role in parish life at St. Mary's Church and participated in many of the church organizations: The Mother's Club; A.C.R.Y.; St. Mary's Guild; and the church choir, where she sang and directed. Anna was an avid baker, and often gave away baked goods to family and friends.

Pani Anna is survived by three sons: Paul (Joan) of Harwich MA; Russell (Kathleen) of Naples FL and Rhinebeck NY; and Lawrence (Patricia) of Congers NY. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: Matthew Kozar, Sarah (Jason) Thorpe, Michael Kozar, Ryan Kozar, Kelly Kozar and her great-grandaughter, Emily Thorpe. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Medvecky; nieces, MaryJane (George) Glosik, Joanne Medvecky, Lorraine Medvecky and her nephew, Joseph Kindya. She was predeceased by her husband, Monsignor Elias Kozar, her grandson, Douglas James Kozar, and her brothers, Joseph Kindya, John Yanoscik and Michael Yanoscik.

Visitation will take place on Monday, October 30, 2017, from 3PM to 8PM with Parastas at 7PM, at Sinatra Memorial Funeral Home (601 Yonkers Ave., Yonkers NY 10704-by CVS). Funeral Liturgy will take place in St. Mary's Russian Orthodox Church on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at 11AM. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
