Orthodox Youth Mission Team Leaves for West Virginia
JOHNSTOWN, PA [Diocesan Chancery] --- Today (Saturday July 9th) the 2016 Orthodox Youth Mission Team (OYMT) left for West Virginia. The team will be participating in a week long mission trip with the Appalachian Service Project (ASP) in the town of Huff Creek, WV in Wyoming County. The goal of ASP is to make homes “warmer, safer and drier.” The team of 34—24 high school youth and 10 adult leaders from 7 parishes of the Carpatho- Russian, Orthodox Church in American and the Greek Orthodox Dioceses in CT, NY and NJ are excited for this opportunity to serve the Lord and put their faith to work helping families in this very impoverished area of the country. Recent floods in the area have made families lives even more difficult.
On the way down, the OYMT will visit St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church in Beckley, WV, where Fr. Sam Haddad is the pastor to attend Liturgy on Sunday. They will be working in Huff Creek from Monday through Friday and then will travel back to Pennsylvania where the youth will be treated to a night at Hershey Park. They will attend Liturgy on Sunday July 17th with Fr. Jeff Zias at St. Michael Orthodox Church in St. Clair before heading home. This is the Orthodox Youth Mission’s Team 6th year serving. The faithful of the Diocese are kindly asked to pray for their safe travels, good work and for the families they will serve.
Keeping in mind the limited internet service, the team hopes to share their impressions and work progress during the week thru blogging, posting photos and through social media.
