Prayer Before Reading Holy Scripture
O Master Who loves mankind, illuminate our hearts with the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our mind to understand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, that we may overcome all carnal desires, entering upon a spiritual life and understanding and acting in all things according to Your holy will. For You are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies, O Christ God, and to You we give glory together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, gracious and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised
from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of
But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then

And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is

And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you

of all men the most pitiable.

again." And immediately the fig tree withered away.
Now when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, "How
did the fig tree wither away so soon?"
So Jesus answered and said to them, "Assuredly, I say to
you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done
to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, 'Be removed and be
cast into the sea,' it will be done.
"And all things, whatever you ask in prayer, believing,
you will receive."
