Prayer Before Reading Holy Scripture
O Master Who loves mankind, illuminate our hearts with the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our mind to understand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, that we may overcome all carnal desires, entering upon a spiritual life and understanding and acting in all things according to Your holy will. For You are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies, O Christ God, and to You we give glory together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, gracious and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

(for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness,
righteousness, and truth),
proving what is acceptable to the Lord.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of
darkness, but rather expose them.
For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are
done by them in secret.
But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the
light, for whatever makes manifest is light.
Therefore He says: "Awake, you who sleep, arise from the
dead, and Christ will give you light."
See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as
redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will
of the Lord is.
And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation;
but be filled with the Spirit,
speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual
songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,

rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go
"Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in
heaven that one of these little ones should perish.
"Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell
him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained

But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen
and a tax collector.
"Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will
be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in

I am there in the midst of them."
