Prayer Before Reading Holy Scripture
O Master Who loves mankind, illuminate our hearts with the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our mind to understand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, that we may overcome all carnal desires, entering upon a spiritual life and understanding and acting in all things according to Your holy will. For You are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies, O Christ God, and to You we give glory together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, gracious and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ
And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by
Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.
For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many
who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed.
And there was great joy in that city.
But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously
practiced sorcery in the city and astonished the people of Samaria,
claiming that he was someone great,
to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest,
saying, "This man is the great power of God."
And they heeded him because he had astonished them with his
sorceries for a long time.
But when they believed Philip as he preached the things
concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and
women were baptized.
Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he
continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which
Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria

who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might
receive the Holy Spirit.
For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

"Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food
which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you,
because God the Father has set His seal on Him."
Then they said to Him, "What shall we do, that we may work the
works of God?"
Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that
you believe in Him whom He sent."
Therefore they said to Him, "What sign will You perform then,
that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do?
"Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, '
He gave them bread from heaven to eat.' "
Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses
did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true
bread from heaven.
"For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and
gives life to the world."
