Prayer Before Reading Holy Scripture
O Master Who loves mankind, illuminate our hearts with the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our mind to understand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, that we may overcome all carnal desires, entering upon a spiritual life and understanding and acting in all things according to Your holy will. For You are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies, O Christ God, and to You we give glory together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, gracious and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.
Epistle Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:18-23
Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems
to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.
For it is written, "He catches the wise in their own craftiness";
and again, "The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise,
that they are futile."
Therefore let no one glory in men. For all things are
whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or
life or death, or things present or things to come; all are yours.
And you are Christ's, and Christ is God's.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 13:36-43
Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house.
And His disciples came to Him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the
tares of the field."
He answered and said to them: "He who sows the good seed is
the Son of Man.
"The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of
the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one.
"The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the
end of the age, and the reapers are the angels.
"Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the
fire, so it will be at the end of this age.
"The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will
gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice
"and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will
be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
"Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the
kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
