Prayer Before Reading Holy Scripture
O Master Who loves mankind, illuminate our hearts with the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our mind to understand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, that we may overcome all carnal desires, entering upon a spiritual life and understanding and acting in all things according to Your holy will. For You are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies, O Christ God, and to You we give glory together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, gracious and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.
Epistle Reading: Acts 8:26-39
Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, "Arise and go
toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza."
This is desert.
So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch

So the eunuch answered Philip and said, "I ask you, of whom
does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?"
Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture,
preached Jesus to him.
Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And
the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?"
Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may."
And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."
So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and
the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.
Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord
caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his

"And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who
sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will
raise him up at the last day."
The Jews then murmured against Him, because He said, "I am the
bread which came down from heaven."
And they said, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose
father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, 'I have come down
Jesus therefore answered and said to them, "Do not murmur among
"No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him;
