An Invitation to the 2015 National ACRY Convention

Friday, July 03, 2015

JOHNSTOWN, PA [National ACRY] -- A.C.R.Y. Members and Diocesan Faithful are cordially invited to join us this Labor Day weekend, September 4-7th for the 2015 National Sr. and Jr. A.C.R.Y. Conventions. This year is especially meaningful to us as a son of St Michael's Church in Binghamton, Deacon William Bennett, grandson of our parish’s Deacon Charles Ellis and nephew of Father Michael Ellis will be ordained to Holy Priesthood at Sunday’s Divine Liturgy by His Grace, Bishop Gregory! St. Michael’s Church and Sr. and Jr. A.C.R.Y. Chapter 40, is pleased to be your hosts, and have worked hard to plan a weekend we hope everyone will enjoy. We will be headquartered in the heart of downtown Binghamton at the newly remodeled Doubletree by Hilton Hotel for this year’s Convention headquarters. Many of you no doubt have fond memories of past events in Binghamton, and we are working with the hotel staff to exceed your expectations again this year! You will find a ‘new look’ not only to the hotel, but to downtown itself which has changed dramatically as our Binghamton University has expanded into the downtown since 2009 when St Michael's hosted their last event bringing hundreds of student apartments, new restaurants, brew pubs, cafes and specialty shops into the area! A Message Signed in Blood

Saturday, June 27, 2015

I am not a fan of horror movies. I don’t enjoy feeling frightened by suspense and terror as a means of entertainment. But back in February I forced myself to watch a video that was about as horrifying as anything I have ever seen. It was so awful that I could not bear to watch it to the end. What made it especially horrifying was that it did not feature actors following a script but was a real-life documentary. The video was titled: “A Message Signed in Blood to the Nation of the Cross”. It was the gruesome video of 21 Orthodox Christians of Egypt beheaded by Islamic terrorists on a beach in Libya. The video was designed to send a message filled with fear and terror to the world, especially Christians “the Nation of the Cross”. The terrorists who murdered these men message did send a message to the world but the message was the opposite of what they intended. The video included a subtle message of triumph, victory, courage, and faith. The unintended message has encouraged and united Christians around the world. One of the captions their murderers wrote said “these insisted to remain in unbelief”. Do we understand what this simple sentence means? It means these Orthodox men were given the choice to deny their faith in Jesus and to recite the Muslim confession of faith. It means these men refused to deny Christ and embrace Islam. With a knife at their throats they were given the chance to be rewarded and be returned Read more...

Latest Episode (7/2/15):  Memory Eternal
When people pass away, we pray that their memory will be eternal. We're not simply asking God to think about them: we're asking Him to save them (and us) and bring us all into His Kingdom. It's the Church's answer to the loneliness and emptiness of death.

STEWARDSHIP

On Stewardship and the Orthodox Life - Part 48: Do Not Be Afraid

Sunday, June 28, 2015

“…perfect love casts out fear.” (1 John 4:18 RSV) Many people are full of doubts. They are unsure of the future. They are unsure of their relationships. They are unsure even about God and salvation. This often puts such people into a position of fear. It is especially the fear of the future that so often takes away any joy in the present. When we fear for our children, our world, our health, our world – we fear things we perhaps ought to fear. But, more often than not we fear things that need not be feared. Take, for example, one of the greatest stewards in the Scriptures. St. Mark tells the story of Jesus watching people in the temple area. Some are placing large sums of money into the temple treasury. Jesus points out to His disciples the poor widow and her fearless action. She had deep trust and virtually no fear: she placed two copper coins into the treasury as her gift. Read more...
