An Invitation to the 2015 National ACRY Convention

Friday, July 03, 2015

JOHNSTOWN, PA [National ACRY] -- A.C.R.Y. Members and Diocesan Faithful are cordially invited to join us this Labor Day weekend, September 4-7th for the 2015 National Sr. and Jr. A.C.R.Y. Conventions. This year is especially meaningful to us as a son of St Michael's Church in Binghamton, Deacon William Bennett, grandson of our parish’s Deacon Charles Ellis and nephew of Father Michael Ellis will be ordained to Holy Priesthood at Sunday’s Divine Liturgy by His Grace, Bishop Gregory! St. Michael’s Church and Sr. and Jr. A.C.R.Y. Chapter 40, is pleased to be your hosts, and have worked hard to plan a weekend we hope everyone will enjoy. We will be headquartered in the heart of downtown Binghamton at the newly remodeled Doubletree by Hilton Hotel for this year’s Convention headquarters. Many of you no doubt have fond memories of past events in Binghamton, and we are working with the hotel staff to exceed your expectations again this year! You will find a ‘new look’ not only to the hotel, but to downtown itself which has changed dramatically as our Binghamton University has expanded into the downtown since 2009 when St Michael's hosted their last event bringing hundreds of student apartments, new restaurants, brew pubs, cafes and specialty shops into the area! The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost - What Have We to Do with Thee?

Saturday, July 04, 2015

"And when He was come to the other side into the land of the Gergesenes, there met Him two possessed with demons, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. " While the men in the boat were yet wondering what manner of man this was that even the winds and the sea obeyed Him, the demons come to proclaim the answer. Although Mark and Luke speak of one man who was possessed by a legion of demons (Mk. 5:9, Lk. 8:27), understand that this one man was one of the two mentioned by Matthew, evidently, the more notorious of the two. Jesus came alone towards them, since no one dared to bring them to Him, so fierce were they. They dwelt among the tombs because the demons wish to inspire the belief that the souls of those who have died become demons. Let no one believe this: for when the soul departs from a man, it does not wander about the earth. For the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God (Wis. of Sol. 3:1), and the souls of sinners are also led away, as was the soul of the rich man, Lazarus. Read more...

Latest Episode (7/2/15):  Memory Eternal
When people pass away, we pray that their memory will be eternal. We're not simply asking God to think about them: we're asking Him to save them (and us) and bring us all into His Kingdom. It's the Church's answer to the loneliness and emptiness of death.

STEWARDSHIP

On Stewardship and the Orthodox Life - Part 49: Yours of Your Own

Sunday, July 05, 2015

"But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from thee, and of thy own have we given thee.” (1 Chronicles 29:14 RSV) It had been King David’s lifelong dream to build a permanent dwelling-place for God: a temple rather than a temporary, movable tent. How David felt about this dream can be clearly seen in Psalm 131: “Remember David, O Lord, and all his meekness. How he swore to the Lord, and vowed to the God of Jacob: ‘I shall not enter my dwelling, I shall not recline on my bed, I shall not close my eyes in sleep, nor my eyelids for dozing, nor give any rest to my temples, until I find a place for the Lord…’”(Psalm 131:1-5).
