Chronology of Important Dates

863 - Saints Cyril and Methodius begin missionary work among the Slavs. They were sent by the Greek Church, Constantinople, and formed the Slavonic alphabet as well as translated the Gospel of Christ.

988 - Slavic people in and about Kiev received the Christian Faith from the Eastern Church. Leadership provided by Prince Vladimir. The Church of Kiev was under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

1890 - Our people from the Carpathian Mountain region of Europe begin immigrating to the United States and settle in the coal-mining and industrial centers. They soon organized Greek Catholic parishes to preserve their faith.

1934 - Dissention in the Greek Catholic Church in America as latinizations of the rites, customs and traditions of the Eastern Church are promulgated.

1936 - Greek Catholic priests gather in Pittsburgh, Pa. to discuss troubles in the Church and to propose the establishment of a Diocese.

1937 - First Diocesan Council held in Pittsburgh, at which clergy and lay delegates from parishes returned to the Faith of their forebearers, and elected Father Orestes P. Chomock as Bishop-Nominee.

1938 - The American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Diocese officially established and canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

1938 - The arrival of Bishop Orestes in New York hailed by a huge crowd as the ship moved into the harbor. A service was held in St. Nicholas Church.

1938 - First Hierarchical Liturgy and formal Installation of Bishop Orestes took place Thanksgiving Day in St. John's Church, Bridgeport, Conn. Archbishop Athenagoras, later to become Patriarch, officiated.

1938 - A diocesan youth organization, called "The Sons and Daughters of the Eastern Church", established. It was later named the "A.C.R.Y. - American Carpatho-Russian Youth." A supplement magazine of the organization began publication, with Very Rev. Joseph Mihaly, editor.

1939 - First National Convention of the A.C.R.Y. convened in Johnstown, PA, October 6-8, attracting young people from parishes across the country. Church services, lectures, business and social events were on the agenda.

1940 - The Diocesan Seminary opens at facilities of St. Nicholas Church, New York. The Seminary later relocated to Nicholson, Pa. and Bridgeport, Conn., until its permanent home in Johnstown, Pa.

1946 - The Diocese began publication of its own newspaper, " The Church Messenger."

1947 - Following the end of World War 11, a reorganization Convention of the A.C.R.Y. took place August 29-30 in Pittsburgh.

1949 - The first issue of "The A.C.R.Y. Annual" published, with Very Rev. John Yurcisin as editor. It has appeared every year since.

1950 - The first "A.C.R.Y. Day" for the benefit of the Seminary was sponsored by the Homestead Chapter July 30.

1950 - Christ the Saviour Church in Johnstown, Pa., accepted a proposal to grant the diocese a parcel of land and $65,000, plus use of a parish home, for the purpose of erecting a Diocesan Cathedral in Johnstown. The diocese and parish incorporated in the state of Pennsylvania.

1950 - Diocesan Board of Trustees vote to build Christ the Saviour Cathedral and approved architectural plans. Bishop Orestes blessed the ground for Cathedral.

1951 - The Diocese purchased a large building on two acres of land in Johnstown for Christ the Saviour Seminary. The grounds were blessed by Bishop Orestes.

1951 - Christ the Saviour Seminary opened its doors to students in its own building in Johnstown on November 2.

1952 - Ground-breaking for the new Christ the Saviour Cathedral took place on July 12, and construction began two days later. Solemn blessing of the cornerstone took place October 5.

1953 - Christ the Saviour Seminary approved and recognized by the Department of Public Instruction of the State of Pennsylvania. Charter granted in 1960.

1954 - Memorial Day was the date of the Solemn Dedication of the newly- constructed Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Johnstown. The event was televised over a wide area.

1954 - First missionary parish of the Diocese organized in what is now Levittown, Pa.

1954 - Diocese pioneered in establishing Chaplaincy and special Boy Scout Awards.

1955 - First Diocesan Pilgrimage held July 4 on Seminary grounds in Johnstown.

1957 - Complete structural renovation of Diocesan Seminary building, Johnstown, Pa.

1963 - New Diocesan headquarters and Episcopal Residence built next to the Cathedral in Johnstown.

1963 - The Diocese observed its 25th Anniversary with special ceremonies.

1963 - Election and Consecration of Auxiliary Bishop Peter Shymansky. He served a short while, falling asleep in Christ May 17, 1964.

1965 - Bishop Orestes elevated to the rank of Metropolitan by the Ecumenical Patriarch

1966 Election and Consecration of Bishop John R. Martin, D.D. Archbishop lakovos led the consecrating Bishops at the services in Christ the Saviour Cathedral.

1974 - A 289-acre parcel of land in Mercer, Pa., given to the Diocese by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Radick of Sharon, Pa., for the development of a camp.

1976 - Ground was broken for the construction of Camp Nazareth.

1977 - Colorful ceremonies mark the formal Dedication of the Diocesan Camp Nazareth in Mercer, Pa.

1977 - Metropolitan Orestes P. Chornock fell asleep in Christ on February 17. Services were conducted in St. John's Church, Bridgeport, Conn.

1977 - Dedication of new Christ the Saviour Educational Center, Johnstown, Pa.

1977 - Blessing of new Mission Church in Freehold, N.J.

1978 - Twenty Hierarchs met in the Cathedral, Johnstown, Pa., for a National Conference of Orthodox Bishops.

1978 - Purchase of large estate in Tuxedo Park, N.Y. for diocesan monastery.

1978 - Ecumenical Patriarch designated Bishop John as successor to Metropolitan Orestes.

1979 - Solemn dedication of the Monastery of the Annunciation in Tuxedo Park, N.Y.

1982 - Orthodox-Lutheran Convocation held at Christ the Saviour Seminary.

1982 - Patriarch Diodoros of Jerusalem visited the Cathedral in Johnstown.

1982 - First meeting of Christ the Saviour Seminary Alumni Association.

1983 - Bishop Nicholas consecrated at St. Mary's Church, Allentown, Pa.,

1983 - Three laymen of the Diocese named Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate: John Halecky, Jr., Frank Finui and Richard J. Radick.

1984 - Archbishop lakovos was the guest hierarch at the 5th Diocesan Pilgrimage at the Monastery.

1984 - Bishop John R. Martin died suddenly on Sunday, September 30. Huge crowds attended the funeral October 4. Laid to rest near the Cathedral in Johnstown.

1984 - Rt. Rev. Peter E. Moichany, Vicar General, announces decision of diocesan clergy to nominate Bishop Nicholas as successor to Bishop John.

1985 - Enthronement of Bishop Nicholas as ruling Hierarch of the Diocese after his election by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

1986 - Pilgrimage headed by His Grace, Bishop Nicholas to Constantinople and the Holy Land.

1987 - Two Diocesan Pilgrimages, headed by Bishop Nicholas to reverence the Weeping Icon of Our Lady of Chicago.

1988 - 1,125 year-commemoration of the conversion of the Carpatho-Russian people to Orthodoxy by Saints Cyril and Methodius.

1988 - 1,000 year -commemoration of Kievan-Rus to Orthodox Christianity by Saint Vladimir.

1988 - Two Pilgrimages to Russia and Czechoslovakia led by Bishop Nicholas for the Millenium Celebration.

1988 - Celebration of the 50th Golden Anniversary of the American Carpatho- Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Diocese.

1989 - Monastery of the Holy Cross established in Washington, D.C.

1990 - His All-Holiness Patriarch Dimitrios I visited the Cathedral and Seminary in Johnstown.

1990 - Celebration of 50th Golden Anniversary of Christ the Saviour Seminary.

1990 - Meeting of Orthodox Catholic Consultation of hierarchs took place in Johnstown.

1990 - Death of Rt. Rev. Mitred Peter E. Molchany, Vicar General of the Diocese.

1990 - V. Rev. Protopresbyter John Yurcisin appointed Diocesan Vicar. Very Rev. Protopresbyter Frank Miloro appointed Diocesan Chancellor.

1990 - Eric Dussling named Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

1991 - Bishop Nicholas, accompanied by Fr. Luke Mihaly, travels to Czechoslovakia to assess condition of the Orthodox Church in that region.

1991 - Death of His All-Holiness, Dimitrios 1, on October 2nd. Bishop Nicholas represented the Diocese at the funeral.

1991 - Bishop Nicholas represented the Diocese at the enthronement of His All- Holiness, Bartholomew I as new Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.

1991 - Attorney Michael Ristvey named Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

1992 - Convent of SS. Martha and Mary established in Washington, D.C.

1992 - HARVEST 2000, Diocesan plan for missions, renewal and evangelization is initiated.

1992 - Bishop Nicholas attends a special Synod of Orthodox Bishops, convened by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Constantinople.

1993 - Junior A.C.R.Y. celebrates 10th Anniversary.

1993 - Bishop Nicholas celebrates 10th Anniversary of consecration to the Episcopacy.

1994 - Attorney Orestes Mihaly named Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

1994 - Bishop Nicholas attends canonization of Father Alexis Toth in South Canaan, PA and Father Maksym Sandowiez in Poland.

1996 - Bishop Nicholas attends a special Synod of Orthodox Bishops convened by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Constantinople.

1996 - Bishop Nicholas participates in enthronement of Archbishop Spyridon as new Archbishop of America.

1997 - His Eminence, Archbishop Spyridon visited Christ the Saviour Cathedral and presided at Ground-Breaking Ceremonies for the new Diocesan Chancery Building.

1997 - His All-Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew visited Christ the Saviour Cathedral and presided over the ceremonies for the Laying of the Cornerstone for the new Diocesan Chancery Building.

1997 - Bishop Nicholas elevated to the rank of Metropolitan by the Holy Synod of Constantinople.

1997 - St. John the Baptist Church in Perth Amboy, NJ and St. Michael the Archangel Church in St. Clair, PA celebrated their 100th Anniversary.

1998 - Metropolitan Nicholas received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Holy Cross School of Theology.

1998 - New Diocesan Chancery Building is blessed by Metropolitan Nicholas.

1998 - Metropolitan Nicholas celebrated his 15th Anniversary of consecration to the Episcopacy.
