Bishop Gregory Quoted In Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Article On The Holy & Great Council

Saturday, June 11, 2016

PITTSBURGH, PA -- [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette] The leaders of their global churches may have some difficulty in getting together after a 1,200-year gap. But in the basement of a South Side Flats church on a recent Thursday afternoon, members of Western Pennsylvania’s diverse array of Orthodox churches put aside religious labels for a humbler cause. As they do each week, volunteers laid out breads, pastries, cereals, canned goods and other foods on shelves and folding tables, setting up for the food-pantry distribution at Holy Assumption of St. Mary Orthodox Church. Colorful icons of saints, along with black-and-white photos of past parishioners, filled the walls behind them. Before opening the doors, the pastor led them in an ancient Easter chant known as the “Paschal Troparion”: “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in tombs bestowing life.” Read more...

The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost - The Healing of the Centurion's Servant !

Sunday, July 17, 2016

And when Jesus entered into Capernaum, there came unto Him a centurion, beseeching him, and saying. This man, too, did not approach Jesus while He was on the mountain, so as not to interrupt the teaching. This is the same man mentioned by Luke [Lk. 7:1-10]. Although Luke says that the centurion sent to Jesus others who were elders, this does not contradict Matthew who says that the centurion himself came to Jesus. It is altogether likely that first he sent others, and then, when death was imminent, he himself came and said: Lord, my servant lieth at home a paralytic, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. Read more...

On Stewardship and the Orthodox Life - Part 103: Self Love (7/17/16)

Sunday, July 17, 2016

The past two blogs were forums to discuss Theosis, Illumination, nous, and the passions. The previous terms, embedded in Orthodox Spirituality, are seldom discussed in homilies. However, Orthodox Spirituality is an essential part of our Church life. And an understanding of Orthodox Spirituality brings our worship into perspective.

We must appreciate the fact that when our nous becomes darkened by our desires, sin, and passions, we no longer worship in a proper manner. In this darkness, we are filled with self-love and the desire to please ourselves instead of seeking constant communion with God.

Self-love creeps into our lives in a very subtle manner, so subtle that we do not recognize it. Read more...
